I have used another cheap and cheerful digital thermometer for 2 or 3 years mainly for monitoring the temperature of joints of meat whilst roasting and have found it really helpful in getting the cooking time spot on. It has also been useful when reheating home-made frozen dishes in the oven as it is often difficult to judge how long they need. More recently I have found it really good for helping to keep my oven at a temperature suitable for the proving stage of bread making. When I accidentally dropped this older device and it stopped working I was gutted.

I purchased the TFA thermometer as a replacement after reading a lot of good reviews, but found it so much more complicated to use that it was a real disappointment. I am normally happy using digital gadgets but I needed to keep referring to the instructions every time I used this thing. It has so many functions that I can do without and yet the ones I was used to and found indispensable on my cheaper thermometer were missing. My old one had preprogrammed settings for different foods (beef, pork, lamb, fish etc.)as well as adjustments for rare, medium, well done. Best of all I could save my own settings such as for my dough proving sessions. None of the latter seems possible with the TFA thermometer and it needed programming for every use which requires many key presses instead of the one or two I have been used to. I had no need for the clock or multiple timers - I have these facilities on my cooker. The only function that was quite a good addition was an alarm to tell me if the temperature had either exceeded or dropped below the desired range but this was a pain to set up each time.

We bought this item because it had strong reviews, and combined a timer, thermometer, and max/min range. Also, it appeared to be by the same manufacturer as made our thermometer-hygrometer, which is robust, and (following some admittedly coarse testing), reasonably accurate.

The item has a flimsy, plasticky feel to the main body and buttons, although the probe looks strong and well made. The magnet is strong.

We sent it back for two faults. I tested the probe in boiling water, and it initially registered 96C, and then slowly slumped to 85C. Also, the display had a minor fault. Perhaps just quality control issues, but we're going for another make this time.

Excellant product. It does exactly as it says on the box.
I like the heat proof cable to the probe that other products dont have.
I use it on a BBQ smoker to get the temperature right.
It works every time just right.

I use this mainly for baking and have been really impressed with it so far. My oven runs hot and this thermometer has therefore made life a lot easier- I use it to accurately preheat the oven, then remove the probe and allow it to cool before sticking it into whatever I'm baking and leaving it there whilst it bakes. As soon as the temperature of the sponge/batter/bread/whatever reaches the correct level, I know that it's done regardless of how long it's actually been in the oven.

Most importantly it's very accurate: I tested mine by boiling some water in a pan, and it read 99 degrees C.

Overall, it's an inexpensive and really useful bit of kit and I'm just hoping that it continues to work as it has done so far (I've only had it for a couple of months).

This was a pretty standard oven probe thermometer, that I was happy with when it arrived.

Unfortunately by the 4th or 5th use, the thermometer was no longer able to register a temperature and went away to that big kitchen in the sky.

A lot of these types of thermometers seem to break quite quickly, so I'm still looking out for one that is more sturdy.

I am returning this thermometer after about 2 week because it started showing temperatures about 30-40 degrees Celsius higher than the real temp. I used it 3 times for yoghurt making where I heat the milk, cool it down and keep it in a warm place for a day. This thing was a wonderful help with this, I really loved it... until it showed me this morning that my yoghurt jars were sitting in 67 degrees under their covers.

The instructions say that immersing the wire in water can cause malfunctioning. This makes me think that steam may be bad for it as well. As I did put the probe in steaming pots, it is possible that the steam seeped into the wire and caused the problem.

In any case if a kitchen thermometer can't tolerate kitchen conditions, it is not fit for purpose.

I thought I had ordered the same thermometer I had had for years, but this one turned up and it is definitely not the same. The previous one had different settings for types of meat - easy to set or change to suit and I used it every time I oven cooked (very frequently) with no problem. This one is very different, - for a start it has a clock and you have to set the time, it also incorporates a timer. However, to use it as a thermometer which is the only function I require, it is so complicated I, like another reviewer, have to refer to the instructions to find out what to do. The biggest downside for me is that I could switch the old model off and just put it on when cooking. There is no 'on/off' switch on this one as I assume it is intended as a clock. The only way to put it off is to take the battery out. It has a magnet on the back which sticks to the front of the cooker when in use, but I do not want it stuck on the top door (where it has to go) all the time - it is quite big and not attractive and I do not need it. Therefore,. it goes in a cupboard when not in use using the battery all the time! Very disappointed, but I think I have seen a Ktchencraft one that is the right type - so it was a very costly mistake as I will have to get another one.
