Biography

Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
The cliché about David Bowie says he's a musical chameleon, adapting himself according to fashion and trends. While such a criticism is too glib, there's no denying that Bowie demonstrated remarkable skill for perceiving musical trends at his peak in the '70s. After spending several years in the late '60s as a mod and as an ... Read more in Amazon's David Bowie Store

I got the original version of this album on the week of release and although most of it didn't immediately grab me, within a couple of weeks i was listening to it every day. there isn't a bad track on it and it flows beautifully as an album. i much prefer albums to work as whole, than just as a collection of good songs and the ongoing story in this one makes all the tracks flow well into each other. the decision to omit 'wishfull beginnings' an replace it with the pet shop boys' remix of hallo spaceboy is a little dubious as it doesn't fit in as well as it might, but it's forgivable. this has been my favourite album for the last six years (well, almost), and though there has been competition, nothing has really equalled it. i think it is bowie's best work, because while it may not be as groundbreaking as heroes, low and lodger were at the time, it's a much bigger sound and it's a long way from being run-of-the-mill. it has been pretty much ignored since its release, which i think is a real shame, so if you've never heard it, or worse still never heard OF it, do your self a favour and add it to your collection as soon as possible.

1.Outside, Bowie's best work since Scary Monsters provides us with the experimentalism that made david the most influencial artist of all time back in the days of 'Stationtostation'&'Low'.
Teaming up once again with Brian Eno (this time helping as producer) to provide Bowie with someone to bounce ideas off, Eno,(who has made a name as rebooting the careers of U2 and James by pushing them into other areas of music)does a wonderfull job.
The album is one of the moodiest I have ever heard making the best of the electronic gadgetry available. It is full of Bass & Guitar hooks on tracks like 'I have not been to oxford town' & 'Outside', the most haunting track is 'The Motel' with Mike Garson providing piano which goes on to dominate the album showing up best on 'I'm Deranged' which is my favouite track.
The album ends on one of Bowie's best uplifting songs (standing easily up against 'Heroes' & 'Sound & Vision') 'Strangers when we Meet' taken from Bowie's previous album 'The Buddah of Subburbia'.
Other artist such as Carlos Alomar on rhythm Guitar is as brilliant as always and even Reeves Gabriels provides some stunning guitar work.
If you believe Bowie was creatively spent after Scary Monsters then it is time to eat your words!

Once Again Bowie makes a reunion with Brian Eno and produces an album of ambient techno, art-rock. The album tells the story of Nathan Adler an art crime dective investigating the murder of Baby Grace Belew. This is one Bowie album that really stands out from the rest and is probably his most experimental work since he last worked with Brian Eno to produce the fantastic late 1970s trilogy (Low, Heroes, and Lodger).
Outside needs the full concentration of the listener the first few times that you listen to it, to really understand what is going on. However after the first few times you have listened to the album with Bowie talking in between songs, you realise that there are some very strong songs that stand alone and can be listen to without listening to the whole album, these include Outside, The Hearts Filthy Lesson, Hallo Spaceboy, No Control and Strangers When We Meet.
A truely excelent album which no Bowie fan should be without, sorry, no music collection should be without.
