Biography

BOB DYLAN Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Bob Dylan's influence on popular music is incalculable. As a songwriter, he pioneered several different schools of pop songwriting, from confessional singer/songwriter to winding, hallucinatory, stream-of-consciousness narratives. As a vocalist, he broke down the notion that a singer must have a conventionally good voice in order to ... Read more in Amazon's Bob Dylan Store

Product Description

Product Description

The singular voice of Bob Dylan has captivated and challenged audiences from the first note of his self-titled debut album for Columbia Records in 1962. With the release of The Complete Album Collection, Vol. One, fans old and new are able to explore Dylan’s career in greater depth than ever before.
From the beginning, Dylan was a pioneer unlike any other - one whose muse took him and his adoring audiences to many exciting places. Just when critics thought they had him figured out as the most literate, acoustic folksmith of the 1960s, he strapped on an electric guitar and performed one of the most daring sonic shifts in pop music history with Highway 61 Revisited. He’d abandon his home base of New York for country-influenced flights of fancy on Nashville Skyline and Self Portrait.
As the 1970s ended and the 1980s began, he began to openly address his newfound Christian faith in his songs. And when even the most loyal fans began to wonder what musical tricks he could possibly still have up his sleeves, he began a run of late-career masterpieces with 1997’s Time Out Of Mind, prompting generations to look forward instead of looking back to discover Bob Dylan.
The Complete Album Collection, Vol. One brings those musical journeys together in one unique USB product. All of Dylan’s original studio and live albums are included--42 albums in all, with 14 of them newly remastered especially for this collection. Also included in The Complete Album Collection, Vol. One is Side Tracks, a new collection of songs from non-album singles, compilations and more. A deluxe digital booklet featuring new essays, original liner notes and detailed discographical information is also included.

The following albums were remastered for the product: 1. Self Portrait (1970) - newly remastered for this collection
2. Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973) - newly remastered for this collection
3. Dylan (1973) - newly remastered for this collection
4. Street Legal (1978) - newly remastered for this collection

10. Good as I Been to You (1992) - newly remastered for this collection
11. World Gone Wrong (1993) - newly remastered for this collection

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprised and Pleased 9 Jan 2014
By Iannis
Received this as a surprise Christmas present from my wife. She thought, quite rightly, that it would be more useful than the CDs. I am now able to listen to albums which I originally bought as tape cassettes - and, of course, all those which I couldn't always afford to buy on release.

There has been a lot of criticism about the quality of the recordings. I find no problem with them as I use the FLAC option of the files, which sound good when played on my Roberts internet radio.

Needless to say as well as listening to all my favourite songs, I have a lot of unheard albums to look forward to.

Disappointments- yes, would have been nice to have the book which was included with the CD collection, or at least a list of the albums and their contents. A real harmonica would have been brilliant instead of the cheapish faux harmonica case.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great if you haven't already got the LPs 1 Feb 2014

For anyone who appreciates Dylan's music but for whatever reason doesn't already own most of the material, this is a very convenient way of acquiring a good quality version. Frankly the fact that it's not the full 24 bit quality originally advertised is probably irrelevant. The limiting factor is likely to be the original recording (remember most of this dates to the 60s and 70s). Also very view of us will own a system expensive enough to notice the slight difference at the very top end.

Cannot fault the music contents, just a big shame not a higher bit rate, that would have been outstanding, and was the prime reason for me ordering the usb version. Also for the price a real modified mouth organ could've been included not a dummy one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Complete Rip-off 8 Nov 2013
By J. Bradbury - Published on Amazon.com

The biggest problem, obviously, is that the files are not the high-res ones originally advertised. Adding insult to injury, the meta data for the files on the USB is sloppy and inaccurate. Basically, you're paying big bucks for a thumb drive and a fake harmonica. Sony needs to make this right or refund people's money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Noise in background - Audio Clips 8 Nov 2013
By G. Shaikh - Published on Amazon.com

I'm no audiophile. I'm a college student with a smartphone and a halfway decent pair of headphones. I bought this for the convenience. I don't have time to rip a whole box of CDs to my computer. The sound quality is no better on the USB version anyway (16-bit, 44.1kHz). But some of the recordings on this USB drive were painful to listen to. I'm sure that when Edison heard his first audio recording coming out of his phonograph in 1877, he heard a recording in higher fidelity with less noise and distortion than what I heard coming out of my headphones on several tracks of "Self Portrait." I just exchanged this for the CD version in hopes that the problem is limited to the USB drive. The folks at Amazon thought that it was a "replacement" rather than an "exchange" so they did not refund the cost difference until I called them. We'll see how the CD's sound.

1.0 out of 5 stars SAVE YOUR MONEY! 15 Nov 2013
By samuel - Published on Amazon.com
bad packaging. not in 24 bit as advertised. cheaply made. truly a complete disappointment. in fact both of the complete releases (CD and usb) are pretty poorly executed. the recent bootleg series are very nicely done and the usb pales in comparison. this item is of such low quality that it should be selling for 19.99, not 2-300 bucks. major disappointment.

1.0 out of 5 stars Falsely advertised and a DISGRACE. 8 Nov 2013
By Jason - Published on Amazon.com

Why did they even bother? As other reviewers have noted, it was initally billed as being 24-bit which is superb quality sound, but now it has been revealed to be just 16-bit, the same quality as CD's-- which is not as good as it could have been. Columbia should have shown some respect to Bob's catalog and his fans, and done this right. They should have looked to Neil Young's Archives project and released this amazing catalog on blu ray, or followed the Beatles' lead and lived up to the promise of a 24-bit USB.

I cancelled my order, and instead purchaed the Beatles Apple USB, which was out of stock, but is being made available again November 12.

Same on you Columbia. Pathetic.

1.0 out of 5 stars No High Res Audio - Only 16/44 5 Nov 2013

This is a review for the Bob Dylan: The Complete Album Collection Vol. 1 harmonica USB.

Please take note that the music on this set is only 16bit/44.1khz and is, therefore, the exact same quality as a regular CD.
When first advertised the music files on this set were supposed to be in high resolution 24bit/96khz, which would have made the usb harmonica a definite must buy.

As is, this item is completely redundant. Not only is the CD box set much cheaper, but it is also more versatile (can be played on a CD player or ripped to your computer) and it includes a nice hard bound book.

Save your money and buy the CD edition of this set instead.

Hopefully, Dylan's music will be released in high resolution PCM someday (like with The Beatles Apple USB).
