My 4 year old son loved this and couldn't waitto get it out of the box. It is lots of fun and great for encouraging children to maintain attention on literacy based activities. As a teacher I am unhappy with how the pen needs to be held and positioned to accurately trace the lights, also the instructions for formation of some of the letters is incorrect. I am possibly being picky because of my teacher background, I love the lowercase magnetic phonic set leapfrog do and I love this product for getting children engaged in literacy based activities.

The pad is lightweight but tough enough to withstand constantly being dropped. Stylus is attached by string with a neat space on the reverse for it to be tidied away,

Bought for a 3y/o who had previously showed NO interest in writing, bought i will admit to simply make up the cash id spent on both kids, and its one they fight over,

3y/o has gone from scribbles to writing first 4 letters of her long name, she can recognise her letters and can differenciate between upper and lower case (puh = p / Pee =P) this is within one calendar month of "playing" with it. She has older friends in reception class and they love it too - she will play teacher and pick a letter -they then copy the lights movements using pen and paper (she does it on little screen) and then they all cheer because they're so clever.

I got this for my 3.5 year old boy. I read the top 20 review, but wish I had read the bottom 20. They are far more accurate.

1) The screen is a cheap and nasty wipe clean type screen, not a proper screen. Not very good at all.
2) The bar which is supposed to wipe the screen clean sticks, which frustrated me and my boy, and rendered it useless.
3) The screen doesnt even hold the letters, sometimes they disappear as you write! Hugely frustrating.
4) The writing implement is enormous. Not easy to hold and not good practice for pens/pencils.
5) The writing implement is so big compared to the screen you have to hold it at an uncomfortable angle. Not good practice.
6) Some of the letters are taught different to at school and from logic. Who starts a "p" from the bottom of the stick?
7) The fact it doesnt do numbers as well as letter, and that you have to do the shapes in order and cant pick your own is just a con.
8) There is no provision or though preparing the lowercase letters for joined up. Something which is taught very early on for good reason, so you dont get stuck in a habit.
9) Dont fall for all the white and green branding, this is tat dressed up.

My advice, leap frog this product.

Will be sending back.

This is a great educational toy. However, there are some flaws in the design which I think could be improved.
Firstly, 'slider' type screen is a bit flimsy, I can't see it being durable in a household with children who are quite rough on their toys. Also, the screen itself does not perfom brilliantly, the pen does not make enough of a mark on the screen when used and sometimes hardly shows up especially when the lights are on underneath the pen marks to show you where to write. The cord on the pen could do with being a bit longer too as its quite difficult to get the pen into the correct position to write.
The toy has a couple of functions, capital letters, lowercase letters, a 'play' function and a drawing function. I think the drawing one is a bit of a waste of time and should have been utilised to include another educational aspect e.g. time telling (child could draw in hands of the clock when told what time to write etc) or short words etc. A final criticism would be that the sound is very annoying after a while and it has no volume control (only a 'loud' and 'louder' type button, so that should be improved in any future design.

Despite this, my children enjoy this toy and I would say that it is worth the money. A good pre-school toy to prepare your child for letter forming in preparation for primary school.

Recommended.
