This communication software package aims to let users manage phone, fax and e-mail messages in one place. It is strongest on phone and fax communication, and includes the features of an office phone system, such as speed dials, unlimited voicemail boxes and fax forwarding to remote locations. It can answer your incoming calls on the computer, distinguish voice calls from faxes, and allow you to provide customised voice menu services for your callers. You can also set up a fax back service whereby callers request archived faxes using voice-driven menus. Basic support is provided for sending and receiving e-mails, but not including automatic message filtering, searching or message storage in multiple folders. For major use of e-mail, users will still need to turn to specialist mail programs such as Netscape Communicator or Microsoft Outlook. Communicate's phone book database will hold multiple phone numbers, fax numbers, postal addresses and other information for each contact. Custom fields can be added, and searches carried out on any field. The data is stored in the common DBF format for ease of import and export. The visual design of this budget package can be somewhat inconsistent and confusing. The main screen represents a telephone answering machine, and all functionality is reached through this interface--a quirky approach that might be intuitive for those unfamiliar with the usual conventions of Windows packages.--Frank Pennycook
